Rob's Recipe of The Month: Quinoa Tabbouleh

This popular Middle Eastern is great for the bounties of our garden. Fresh herbs really make it yummy, and when our tomatoes and cucumbers are ready, our guests’ taste buds will explode. In a good way.

• Bring 2 cups water to a boil. Stir in:
• 1 cup quinoa, red or yellow.
• Turn heat to low, cover and cook for 20 minutes.
• Uncover, turn into a bowl, and chill for at least one hour.

Add:
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 3-5 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
• 2 cucumbers, peeled, seeded, finely chopped
• 5 cups finely chopped herbs, including your choice of: parsley, mint, purslane, dill
• 1 bunch green onion, diced
• 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
• 1/3 cup crumbled Feta cheese

Whisk together and toss in:
• 1/3 cup lemon juice
• 1/3 cup olive oil
• ¼ teaspoon allspice
• ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

One head of butter lettuce, separated, washed, & dried

Spoon the salad into the leaves of lettuce & enjoy!

Joey's Garden Tips: IPM

We have been plagued by snails, mealybugs and aphids so far this year, and they all do a great deal of damage. So what to do?

Instead of spraying harmful chemicals on the ground where dogs and children walk and play, utilize Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

"Integrated Pest Management is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment" (Environmental Protection Agency).

Buy beneficial insects online to combat destructives insects, manually remove and kill malicious bugs with your hands, spray them off with water, plan your garden to increase biodiversity to confuse insects and create barriers. Happy Gardening!

New Highland Pooches!

Meet Harvey and Bessa!

We all decided we needed some fluffy friends to help protect the garden at night from deer and rabbits, so we adopted two Heeler mixes from the Fort Bragg Animal Shelter.

They are a very sweet and fun brother and sister team. Come visit them!
